This scientific monograph presents a overview of the research findings about life of older people in the last twenty years. All contributions are founded in empirical research work of authors who engage for many years in this field of research. None of the rare monographs written about older people in recent years offer this kind of overview. Research findings published in this book enable us to make inferences about the impact of wider social changes on everyday life of older people and their close relatives. We can say that now we know, why and how the life of older people has changed.

In this paper we have analyzed the quantitative and qualitative data from the research on social networks of the elderly in Slovenia and focused on two generations (parents and grandparents) at two different points in time (1987 and 2005). We have established that regardless of the various external encouragements, the most important factors for further learning are family values and the individual’s attitude towards learning that is formed throughout life and is influenced by social networks (especially family and neighborhood).
