Demographic, social and economic changes influence the existing paradigm of intergenerational learning, which besides the exchange of knowledge and experiences inside the family influence also the community learning. Intergenerational cooperation involve ensuring different kinds of support and intergenerational help in family environment, but it is also connected with solidarity in the wider society in the sense of transfer of goods and sources for the welfare of different generations. Demographic and family changes demands a more in-depth analysis of the possibilities and needs for establishing broader family and non-family bonds between the generations. Intergenerational education is one of the important assets for reestablishment of intergenerational ties. Intergenerational education programmes can emerge from various institutions and in various forms, e.g. in schools, community organisations, hospitals and elsewhere and have an influence on individuals as well as on local community.

COBISS.SI-ID: 48709218In the paper the authors use multiple classification method to analyse influence of relational and structural factors on intergenerational solidarity (measuread as exchanged support between parents and adult children). The exchanged support is a dependant variable, while independant variables are demographic characteristics (age and gender), relational characteristics (frequency of contact, importance of person, presence of negative feelings) and structural factors (geographic distance). Main findigs are: women receive and give more support than men, support decreses with increasing age of child and increases with increasing age of adult; frequency of contact has positive effect on number of exchanges support, while presence of negative feelings (either very frequent or total absence of negative feelings) has a negative influence on exchange of support.

COBISS.SI-ID: 31553373Our research questions address the new role of the elderly as the source of support in intergenerational support flows. We are addressing the support flows in the family as well as in the community in the context of structural, institutional and cultural changes 20 years after the transition in Slovenia. We describe demographic structure of families, households as well as key features of Slovenian social welfare system, family values and changes during past 20 years (using secondary data). Using primary data (quantitative survey) on social support networks - which are theoretically defined as one of possible ways to analyse intergenerational solidarity, we analyse intergenerational transfers.

COBISS.SI-ID: 29795165This doctoral dissertation investigates the quality of life of older people through the perspective of risks and social support networks. Methodological approach is based on a mixed-method research design with a participant-selection model. Quantitative analysis findings show structural vulnerability of older people for some types of social support. Although the most serious risks are mastered – we can, on the other hand, observe a lack of support in financial and informational matters, and to a lesser degree, in social companionship an instrumental support. In our central qualitative - grounded theory approach risks were categorized according to the central category and the “meta-risk”, i.e. loss of independence. More specifically, we identified health risks, financial risks, social risks and structural risks. In this regard, we found that the situation becomes critical for an individual when risks start to overlap and to amplify each other. Similarly, we have categorized various coping strategies and thereby recognized older people as active and resourceful productive social actors, who take care of their own well-being. We have developed a spiral model illustrating the dynamic process how risks emerge and are realized, how they are amplified and also how risks become managed and reduced – thereby showing the process of losing and retaining a certain individual level of quality of life.

COBISS.SI-ID: 256048384The majority of the members of our research team cooperates and contributes with the preparation of educational materials and lectures in the 3rd thematic section on Intergenerational solidarity of this project. The program of expert education additionally qualifies expert workers in education in the Republic of Slovenia for knowledge, understanding and transfer of knowledge on participants of the education processes. Participants of our training and education section are presented with findings on intergenerational solidarity and its nature in Slovenia (services for older people, connections between older and younger generations, the role of community and voluntary organizations, neighbours and family members.). We encourage the understanding of the role of older people in the society and present the prejudices about older people and different ways how to overcome them. Special attention is focused on individual responsibility for surmounting intergenerational conflicts and the lack of understanding between generations.
