COBISS.SI-ID: 50490466Political profession is highly masculinised. First by its gender structure (low representation of women) and second by the existing culture and practices, which hinder reconciliation of private and professional life (unpredictable and long working hours, night and weekend work, subordination of private to public etc.). Research shows, that people in masculinised professions make (and have to make, if they want to be successful) more job-family trade-offs than in more feminised or integrated professions. Since women in our society are still the ones, which do the majority of care and household work, the low share of women in Slovenian politics can consequently be attributed also to problems with reconciliation of private and professional life. Even though in some work environments organization and way of work began to change in order to make it easier for the employees to reconciliate both life spheres and family friendly measures have been adopted, this does not apply for political profession. Women and men, who want to enter politics, have to adapt to existing structure, which ignores the demands of private life – that is traditionally easier for men.

COBISS.SI-ID: 50490722In the paper are summarized the key findings of qualitative part of the research done on municipal councilors. Women need for entrance in the politics special support, their greatest obstacle for entering politics is hidden in self-perception of their skills and burden of private life. Women in spite of their housework which of course is gender determinated report about success in reconciliation of both spheres which shows how deeply internalized are patterns of work distribution which are not perceived as problematic.

COBISS.SI-ID: 47476578The paper will present preliminary results of the research on the population of male and female politicians in Slovene national politics and the obstacles and support they have encountered on their way to political positions. In Slovenia women's presence in politics is, after two decades of political party pluralism and despite their active engagement in political parties and civil society organizations, proportional electoral system on the one side and despite their high achievements in the educational system, high employment rate and low gender pay gap, still low (under 15 percent). The main research questions is why this is still so.
