Validation of the age/culture neutral child/adolescent personality inventory (ICID) is analysed and explained. We discuss the development of child personality conceptions and measures, construction of the new measure, results of longitudinal and cross-sectional studies in Slovenia, the structure of the ICID constructs (15 mid-level and 4 robust personality traits), reliability, predictive validity, stability, and inter-rater agreement of the ICID, age and gender differences in perceived traits. Instructions for application and interpretation with case studies and normative data are presented.

Three types of temporal and cross-observer consistency in adult reports on 3- to 5-year-olds’ personality are presented. A congruent and temporally stable four-component structure was identified in maternal/paternal ratings and teachers’ ratings form 3 components. Parental agreement is high across specific/robust traits. It is lower between parents and teachers, due to variation in child behavior across contexts and differences in caretakers’ roles. Child personality traits were stable over time, a small increase was observed in the perceived expression of extraversion and conscientiousness.
