Among all post-socialist countries, the institutionalisation of policy analysis in Slovenia probably has one of the longest traditions. Policy analysis developments in Slovenia can be explained by the three main factors: a) internal political science developments, b) the transition to democracy and its consolidation in a newly established state, and c) Slovenia joining EU.

Article investigates the impact of the European Union membership on party politics in Slovenia. Although the article’s primary focus is on the first four years of EU membership, it also draws comparisons and contrasts with the accession period. Since independence in 1991 and until full membership in 2004 the EU has only played a side role in party politics in Slovenia. The conducted analysis showed that the influence of the EU in party politics relates mainly to two factors – the governmental position of a party and its representation in the European Parliament.
