In this study, intramuscular electrogene therapy (EGT) as a new therapeutic approach to canine tumors, was established. Six dogs with different tumors were treated with intramuscular EGT using DNA plasmid encoding human IL-12 alone or in combination with surgery and chemotherapy . The results of this study indicate, that intramuscular IL-12 EGT in dogs with spontaneously occurring tumors, is a feasible, simple and safe procedure, which exerts systemic transgene release of IL-12 and induction of IFN-γ response in treated animals, making it promising treatment modality in veterinary medicine.
