Joint replacement strategies have improved the quality of life for many patients; however, over 10% of all implants stil have to undergo operative revision. For differentiation "septic" from "aseptic" loosening of joint prostheses, histological analysis of periprosthetic tissue, which is performed for each patient after revision operatin, is necesary.

Combination of pre- and peri-operative diagnostic methods is usefull for differentiation between septic and aseptic loosening. It is ideal to diagnose or exclude prosthesis joint infections preoperatively. It was described in an article that joint aspirate leukocyte count of 1.7 x 10 and >65% PMN have adequate specificity and sensitivity for diagnosis prosthetic joint infection regardless the type of implant.
