We performed an extended study of cytotoxicity of small magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications on different cell lines. Here is essential that the additional layer of silica significantly reduces the cytotoxicity of nanoparticles, improves overall biocompatibility, and allows flexible further functionalization regardless of the selection of core magnetic material. Based on the results we selected magnetic nanoparticles with silica coating as a primary platform for the magnetofection, which will allow further research in bringing magnetifection in the clinical application.

COBISS.SI-ID: 810363We introduced preparation and properties of magnetic nanoparticles with dual stage functionalization, silica coat and additional functionalization with streptavidin. Such system combines magnetic properties of nanoparticle core with biologically relevant surface functionalization, appropriate for different biomedical techniques form magnetic separation and marking to binding of DNA and cell transfer. Such material will be used as a base material for further research in the field of biomedical application of nanoparticles.
