The research project SERENA (Steam Explosion REsolution for Nuclear Applications) addresses the remaining issues on fuel-coolant interaction mechanisms and their effect on ex-vessel steam explosion energetics. In the project leading scientists in this field from Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, and Slovenia (JSI) are participating. The main goal of the project SERENA is to gain from the safety standpoint enough reliable estimations of the pressure loads during a hypothetical ex-vessel steam explosion in a flooded reactor cavity.

COBISS.SI-ID: 23492391The goal of the project was the identification and description of safety characteristics of third generation reactors. The considered reactors were AP1000, EPR, APWR and ATMEA1. The identification of safety characteristics is based on the description of structures, systems, components and their integral performance given in the available project documentation of the vendors. The identification is performed according to the safety philosophy and safety standards of IAEA. The identification is supported by the review of safety analyses, which was organized according to the classific. by US NRC.
