Kinetic resolution of rac-1-phenylethanol with vinyl acetate, catalyzed by immobilized lipase B from Candida antarctica, was performed in two different unconventional solvents; ionic liquids and supercritical carbon dioxide and in a batch stirred-tank reactor and in a high-pressure batch-stirred variable-volume reactor. The influence of different ionic liquids, temperature and substrate ratio on this enzyme-catalyzed reaction was studied. The highest initial reaction rate and final conversion of 100 % was achieved in the case when hydrophilic [bmim][BF4] was used as solvent.

COBISS.SI-ID: 12966934Young Researcher Franja Šulek is after successful defense of doctoral thesis employed in the Orthopaedic Hospital Valdoltra in the frame of the project TRANS2CARE (Transregional Network for Innovation and Technology Transfer to Improve Health Care). The project has great potential for realization of significant innovation in biomedicine by defining three main objectives. On a personal level, individuals will be benefited from improving the general welfare and health, especially in senile age (Healthy aging). On the social level, the general improvement of health conditions will lead to savings in the health sector. Finally, the penetration of new services and biotechnological products and qualifying of young, highly educated workers, involved in the project, will encourage the development of new business niche in the health sector as well as the recruitment of highly qualified personnel will be facilitated.
F.03 Increased qualifications of the research and development staff
The lecture covered a historical overview of biocatalysis and the advantages and disadvantages or limitations of its use in applicative purposes. Review of new trends in the development of biocatalysis in terms of non-conventional reaction media (e.g. supercritical carbon dioxide and ionic liquids, or combinations of both) and the synthesis of enantiopure compounds using selective biocatalysts were demonstrated. Use of immobilized biocatalysts on different carriers or without them was described in details.
B.05 Guest lecturer at an institute/university
COBISS.SI-ID: 15541782On November 7th and 8th, 2011 was at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemcal Engineering organized the 2nd Conference on Applied Biocatalysis and the traditional 7th Meeting of Students and University Professors from Maribor and Zagreb in the frame of scientific technological cooperation between Slovenia and Croatia. On the conference 78 authors presented their research work in 36 contributions. The conference attended besides authors from Slovenia also authors from Croatia (University from Zagreb), Hungary (University from Veszprem and University from Budapest) and Romania (University Cluj-Napoca). Prof. Dr. Laszlo Gubicza and Prof. Dr. Katalin Bélafi Bakó from Vezprem University, Hungary held keynote lectures where they introduced basics and overview of bioreactors and enzymatic production of biofuels. Prof. Dr. Gyula Vatai introduced in his keynote lecture the use of membrane separation processes in food technology.
