In the period between October 10-14, 2010, an international workshop on Hg in contaminated sites took place in Piran organized by Jozef Steafn Institute (M. Horvat) and Marine Biological Station - National Institute of Biology (J. Faganeli). The workshop encompassed the presentation of about 50 contributions (talks and posters) dealing with characterization, impact and remediation of Hg contaminated sites in aquatic, atmospheric and soil environments.

COBISS.SI-ID: 2286415The Pialassa Baiona lagoon received 100-200 tons of Hg generated by an acetaldehyde factory in 1957-77. In this project, the Hg cycling at the sediment-water interface was investigated using benthic chambers. The daily integrated MeHg flux was low averaging only 7% of that obtained in a similar Hg-contaminated environment, i.e. Grado Lagoon. Conversely, in situ Hg flux accounted for a comparable amount to that observed in Grado lagoon. Hg mobilization and sequestration in the system seem related to extemely anoxic conditions.
