The appearance of distant metastasis is the most important cause of death in breast cancer patients. The research on individual tumour cells, found in the blood or/and bone marrow of cancer patients, brings new knowledge on tumour biology and opens up new therapeutic potential in the future. The article described recent knowledge on the methods and possibilities of application of circulating tumour cells (CTC). It concludes with the notion that we could - by targeting specifically the CTC, possibly prevent metastasis. With the vaccine against HER2 and against other important biological pathways we could effect CTC, and theoretically lower the probability of metastasis of CTC ("CTC seeding") and disease relapse.
