The article draws attention to eventual hazards and environmental influences related to mine waste deposits in Slovenia. Numerous accidents with long-range consequences for human and wider environs already occurred in the World, which emphasized the importance of legal regulations on management of waste from mining and other extractive industries. Two largest metal mines in Slovenia are Idrija and Mežica, which have already ceased to operate, however, old burdens are still present in the environment.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1814613Preliminary results of research of material from large mine and processing waste deposits in the upper Meža Valley are presented in this contribution. Poor ore and ore processing waste deposits act as indirect source of heavy metals in the environment. SEM/EDS analysis showed that heavy metals occur as major constituent elements in minerals and partially as trace elements in minerals. Only minor contents of heavy metals are bound to iron oxy-hydroxides and iron oxy-hydroxy sulphates.
