The monograph Theatre After the Change: And What Was There Before the After? presents an anthological overview of the developments in the theatre of Central European countries after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The group members Barbara Sušec Michieli, Barbara Orel, Denis Poniž and Anja Bajda contributed four independent scientific papers dealing with the role of Slovenian theatre in redefining the dominant social discourses at the time of the economic, political and identity crises before the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the independence of Slovenia. The article deals with the problematics of redefining the concept of national festivals. At the time of transnational cultural pluralism in united Europe, festivals recognise and are striving to seize the opportunity to establish a new identity in the process of internationalisation. The author argues that national festivals can play an important role in building European cultural sphere as they decisively contribute to the bridging of the gap between European public sphere and the institutional practices in the national environments where they take place.

The new distribution of power in the contemporary media landscape has caused great changes in the understanding of (theatre) criticism. The paper deals with the detachment from the traditional concept of criticism (based on the principle of judgment and evaluation) and analyses the shift towards other evaluation procedures that are in fact alien to the form of criticism. It views the transfigurations of critical judgement as productive possibilities for enforcing "new criticism" in the creative fields of theatre and the performing arts (e.g. conceiving theatre programmes and festivals).
