The edited volume brings a selection of studies and theoretical discussions by authors who analyse representational functions of a wide array of social, cultural, verbal, visual and musical practices in Slovenia and similar environments. Considering the content and its interdisciplinary approach the volume contributes to contemporary Slovenian academic debate on the characteristic of social practices and identities and on the ways social practices attain political meaning, hence influence on social standing of individuals and groups, and on the distribution of social power.

COBISS.SI-ID: 259179776The lecture discusses the consequences that the ritualization has on interpretation possibilities and politics of representation in the case of studio portraits of men who were serving in the Yugoslav People's Army. It is an analysis of the practice of taking soldiers' studio portraits in the socialist Yugoslavia as a ritual through which a common image of the JNA soldier was produced, which inevitably led to de-personalization of portraits. Observed from the present-day perspective, these common, uniform, ritualized portraits cause an interpretational uncertainty, while simultaneously securing representational autonomy of men depicted in the photographs: somewhat paradoxically, de-personalization cast them as autonomous subjects with a possibility to articulate their own voice. In production of highly personalized portraits that emerged on the eve of Yugoslavia’s breakdown, however, the voice was taken away from the portrayed soldiers.

COBISS.SI-ID: 32837165The publication contains a selection of thematisations which deal with food, music and belonging. Authors analyse cases of practices and situations where multicultural encounters and exchanges occur. Essentially this is a guide to spaces which are explicitly ethnically defined, but at the same time also promote supra-national and multicultural diversities. Such spaces can be found both in urban and rural areas across Slovenia. These spaces, however, are not mere locations but predominantly spaces filled with meaning, spaces where differnt social and cultural landscapes, ideas and desires meet.
