Hannah Arendt’s project of analyzing the political in the era of the end of the political is discussed on two levels: first, as Arendt’s understanding the political “from the hermeneutical point of view”, i.e. as related to human “being-in-the world” (Human Condition); second, as her understanding it “from the performative point of view”, i.e. as a public personification, a masquerade (On Revolution). The question of how the political, which determines “human concerns”, or “human condition” renders the same human life in its private sphere as non-political and anti-political, is then discussed on that basis.

The text in this book focuses on the history of Slovenian journalism which is presented and analysed on the basis of newspaper articles that show the spirit of the times as well as the development of journalism as such. By analysing the journalistic discourse, memoirs and journalistic reflections the text reveals the history of journalism, the ways in which it developed its genres and manner of reporting on realities, as well as the ways in which it established the public field and confronted the various forms of control and censorship

The purpose of this article is twofold: fi rst, to examine the motif of warning birds, associated with Attila's siege of Aquileia in 452, in its late antiquity context, and second, to trace the transformation of this motif in three medieval Venetian chronicles: Origo civitatum Italiae seu Venetiarum (Chronicon Altinate et Chronicon Gradense), La Cronaca di Marco and Dandolo's Chronica Extensa. The motif of warning birds in the three Venetian chronicles can be viewed from two perspectives. First, on a larger scale, the discussed motif can be seen as a part of a broader historiographical vision underlining the importance of the earliest settlements in the lagoons for the growth of the Republic of Venice.

I discuss the question of the context of literary history in Paul Celan’s poetry focusing on the problem of the role and the status of quotation as a sign of the reception of the historicity of literature, of its traditions and of its contemporaneity. Within the development of Celan’s poetic oeuvre I especially accentuate the confrontation with the fate and the poetry of Osip Mandelstam.

Philosophical writings, collected under the title “Contemplations. Outlines of phenomenological hermeneutics”, discuss the fundamental presuppositions of the phenomenological-hermeneutical turn in the contemporary philosophy, the departure point thereby being precisely the encounter with “contemporaneity” itself. The attempt to comprehend this situation demands a contemplative attitude, which cannot be represented anymore through the reflective consciousness, but grants an entry into an existential openness towards the world.
