The monograph comprises a presentation of the almost complete body of paintings in the collection of the National Museum of Slovenia. Besides these, also archival sources from the Museums' Archive concerning the paintings, collection and collectors, acquisition, motivs, portraitees, etc. are published. The documents are assessed and published for the first time.

The article discusses the issues of Kopitar's library or rather the fate of his books that are presently not curated by the National and University Library in Ljubljana. It is assumed that some of the books were first held in Vienna by one of the auctioneers, Matthäus Kuppitsch, and later they found their way to the Britisch Library through the mediation of a Berlin bookseller, Adolf Asher.

Based on a concrete study case the article addresses the problem of institutionalisation of the heritage preservation with all the consequences it brought on. It presents the preservationist activities of Ladislau Benesch through the comparison between the professional evaluation of his activities as a collector, restorer and conservator and his own reflection of his endeavours in the area of preservation, conservation and interpretation of the cultural heritage. The question whether the a priori professional evaluation of Benesch as a dilettante, which is based exclusively on the fact that he was a soldier and did not have any academical education, is in fact justified, is given a special attention. From the historical perspective such an understanding presents itself as rather limited. What should serve as a basis for assessing his activity in cultural heritage is namely his understanding of the subject itself and the methods he used.
