Since the exhaustion of postmodernism in the first half of the 1980s, when its production could no longer provide an accurate interpretation of its immediate social reality, a number of litearary attempts to deviate from the postmodernist dictum have apperared, claiming to be successors. From the perspective of the zeit-based typologies, the rightful successor to postmodernism should already funtion according to the metaphysical premises ofthe postmodern epoch. Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian wrote literature in many genres, from travelogues to poems and aphorisms. An analysis of this manifold literary work helps to explain his later acceptance of the Mexican throne – a decision that is difficult to understand because it entailed the surrender of all nobility rights in Austria (Through Maximilian was second to the throne), because it was taken without guarantees from the navel powers of the time, and because of the volatility of the situation in Mexico. Maximilian’s Romantic worldview, his sense of personal mission and his conviction that he had a family vocation to rule over the Hispanic empire played central roles in his decision.

The concept of transgressiveness first appeared during the Early Modern Age, and can since then be found in legal, theological, scientific and philosophical discourses. It predominantly refers to phenomena that transcend the limits of the ordinary, shift from expected practices and defy the fundamental conventions of communication, society or morality. Although its meaning is not sharply defined, there is no doubt that transgressiveness is linked to the vital functional dimensions of cognitive and social systems, since establishing, controlling and eliminating unconventional states is part and parcel of the fundamental mechanisms that ensure adaptability in complex environments. Of course, these mechanisms manifest themselves in various ways in different social systems such as science, the humanities and literature.
