International scientific conference on bioethics was succesfuly conducted between december 7. and 8., with 17 presentations from Slovenia and abroad. Bioethics, as a field of applied ethics, deals with some of the most urgent moral dilemas od modern society. This is important in the time when Slovenia has to form some new bodies or commisions dealing with bioethics and medical ethics. Our conference had great impact in scientific community, but had also drawn significant attention of concerned public and media.

COBISS.SI-ID: 40924514Elements of the Philosophy of Right (Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts) is considered to be a fundamental work on practical and, more specifically, political philosophy. In it Hegel elaborates a systematic concept of right, as an “existence of freedom”, and elucidates conditions – formal, moral, and ethical –, in order for the “free will” to actualize its freedom. Hegel’s philosophy od right is a critique of Kant’s morality – which he reproaches as being non-actual and arbitrary –, and against it, Hegel stresses the “ethical life”, Sittlichkeit, which combines ethical, social, public and historical objectivity that makes a subject to what it really is.

COBISS.SI-ID: 271154176The Panopticon project for a model prison obsessed the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham for almost 20 years. In the end, the project came to nothing; the Panopticon was never built. But it is precisely this that makes the Panopticon project the best exemplification of Bentham's own theory of fictions, according to which non-existent fictitious entities can have all too real effects. There is probably no building that has stirred more philosophical controversy than Bentham's Panopticon.
