The book represents a survey of Chinese philosophy from the ancient era till the end of the 20th century. Since it contains interpretations of modern and contemporary Chinese thought, it also counts as a pioneering work in this field on the international level. The authoress deals with Chinese intellectual history on the basic of her excellent mastering of Chinese language, and of other central features by which Chinese tradition and modernity has been defined. Because it reveals many specifically Chinese concepts, it displays a most autochthonous picture of Chinese tradition of thought.

The investigation follows the presumption, according to which the paradigm of structural conditionality of human perception and comprehension forms a crucial specific feature of traditional and modern Chinese theories of knowledge. The article within the framework of poetic tradition, examines the concept of Chinese utopia, i.e. ideal society where peace and happiness prevail. Threatened by the disasters of war and in order to escape the political chaos and suffering, people fled to the mountains where they established autonomous rural communities, independent of turbulent times of the outer world. The analysis of the selected text is first of all focused on those aspects of the ideal society which on symbolic level enlighten the researched theme, and thus explains the utopian vision of a happy land.
