The article discusses the development of ecclesiastical organisation in the area of the central Danube Region and the Western Balkans after the victory over Arianism in the late 4th century. The core of the article refers to the formation of metropolitan and later archdiocesan seats (Sirmium, Salona, Justiniana Prima, with Aquileia also reaching into the northwest region of this area) and their gradual disintegration in the late 6th century. It is the first attempt at ecclesiastical prosopography for the territory of Western Illyricum and the northern part of the Eastern Illyricum.
