The journal presents 18 papers on various aspects of the city elites of the Middle Ages in the area between the Eastern Alps, the Adriatic, and Pannonia. Slovene authors have analysed the characteristics of city elites in Slovene coastal and inland cities. The status of women with their business abilities and the social stratification of Jews are analysed as special cases.

COBISS.SI-ID: 255699200During a march of the Visigoths under King Alaric from the Balkans into Italy in 408, the latter made contact with Ataulf while stopping on Slovene territory in the autumn of 408; at that time Ataulf was the leader of a Gothic-Hunnish party inhabiting the territory of the First Pannonia (today's West Hungary). Following Alaric's death, Ataulf became King of the Goths and led the Goths from Italy to South Gaul and Spain. He was the first barbarian king to marry a Roman princess. The lecture sheds light on the issue of the so-called Pannonian federates (ethnically mixed, Goths, Huns and Alans), which were created out of opportunity or for common goals, and disappeared after being united with the central group of Goths. After integration, Ataulf had no difficulty in becoming the king of the entire united people. He endeavoured to bring Goths and Romans closer together, yet failed. His ideas make him a predecessor of Theodoric the Great.

COBISS.SI-ID: 45982562The introductory lecture emphasised the treatment of the history of women and of gender history in Slovene historiography. The lecturer pointed out the important changes in the last decade, as well as the deficiencies which are visible especially in larger syntheses of Slovene history. She focused in particular on the issue of familiarity with the normative systems that had determined the role of women in the society of the old regime, and with daily practices that often show deviation from and incoherence with the legal standards in individual areas and periods.
