The talk presented a view on word structure in which words are argued to exhibit the syntactic phenomenon of Chomsky's (2001) phase-by-phase spell-out in Marantz (2001) fashion, where category-forming phrases such as little vP, nP and aP constitute phases at the word level. Category changing morphology within a word thus yields phases, and cyclic phonological effects within words can be seen as following from the cyclic operation of syntactic derivation by phase, as in Marvin (2002).
