Article analyzes key structural reasons leading to decreased role of intellectuals in our time, compared to previous epoques. In this regard it is legitimate to pose the question of "the end of intellectuals" in favor of the "rule of experts". It would be naive in this regard to refer that after every rise there were always falls and than after certain and critically breaking time another rise. This time it might be different since in contrast to previous times a structural and institutional basis is are slipping away and prevents a responsible and influential role of this specific social group. Although it is possible to use Gramsci to address the role of intellectuals in society, using his "pessimism of intellect", the new resistance ("occupy") against neoliberal commodified society opened new opportunities - Gramsci's "optimism of will" - and social spaces for a more adequate and critical role of intellectuals. They might not rely to same extend as before to institutional basis but might nevertheless drown from today's resistance movements. In this regard our article is relying on Mannheim's sociological classification of ideological (conservative) and utopian (rebel) intellectuals. In today's serious and still deepening crisis author is recognizing an opportunity to strengthen the latter, on the one hand because they are not burdened with conformism and self-censorship and on the other hand because they can fulfill with their critical and morel attitude the space between to key constituents of democracy: the government/power and powerless citizens.
