Slovene language in contact with the European Danube and Alpine area is a primary research project in the Department of Slovene studies in Maribor. It researches the usage and position of the Slovene language in the European area between the danube region, the Alps and the Adriatic. The research is concerned with the central Slovene area and with its contacts with other linguistic areas at the borderlines.

This article shows dual development of the Slovene language in the Alpine and Pannonian area - the central literary language and the East-Slovene literary language existed until the middle of the 19th century. In the East-Slovene literary language existed until the middle of the 19th century. In the east-Slovene literary language it is necessary to differ between the Prekmurian and the Eastern Styrian language varieties.
