The history of Maribor is marked by conf1icts between the Germans and the Slovenes, which became a part of the city's culture and everyday life. It is extremely interesting to observe the Maribor's development during the last years before the downfall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the moment when the decades-Iong aspirations of Lower Styria Slovenes for national autonomy came true. With the downfall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, Maribor's society experienced a transformation and an identity crisis, which included not only the Germans but the Slovenes as well.
