The book presents the main features of transport accessibility to regional centers as the central pillars of regional and spatial structure in Slovenia. Attention is focused on addressing the situation in accessibility planning itself, followed by modeling geographic reality using spatial analyses in a geographic information system. They show the state of spatial equilibrium and accessibility of regional centers and the correspondence between regional borders in various regionalization proposals for Slovenia and their centers’ borders of accessibility.

The goal of the monograph was to study spatial conditions of the Municipality of Idrija and point out its developmental potentials. The two introductory chapters, which comprise the physical geographical and social geographical overview, are followed by chapters on micro regionalisation of the municipality, natural heritage, vegetation, landslide hazards, population, economy, transport and spatial development. The monograph can be regarded as a sample for future regional studies, which offer a scientific basis for a quality spatial and developmental planning.

The monograph comprises 34 scientific and expert chapters and represents the 10th in a line of books, which have been published every second year from 1992 and offer a two-year overview of the scientific, expert and pedagogic work in the field of development and the use of geographic information systems in Slovenia. The number of authors (around 70) and the variety of their professions give an insight into the development of such research as well as offer the expansion and the indispensableness of their use. All ten published books comprise around 300 articles.

Agriculture in Slovene countryside has lost its leading role in the economic development some time ago. The area of agricultural land is reduced on the account of different forms of urbanization. The paper explains the role of countryside in modern social processes and the importance of its intertwining with cities. Through simulating developmental consequences in typical areas of different developmental possibilities an attempt to evaluate the social and environmental functions of agriculture as important component of balanced regional development in Slovenia is discussed.
