The book deals with dimensions of tradition in modernity, as reflected in the half-urbanized environment on the northeastern outskirts of Ljubljana - at Janče with its surroundings. The author analyzes the concept of tradition, which is one of the core in ethnology and folklore studies, and presents its concretizations in the ethnographic field, especially its role in local festivals. She mainly focuses on peasant work and its ritual dimensions as well as on other types of heritage/tradition of rural environment. Heritage is not only positively valued by local inhabitants, but also represented in the idealistic form, thus creating rural idyll, attractive for tourists. Having a special value, it has become the means of invoking and preserving identifications with certain communities and the area itself, and is at the same time also used as an argument in general and sustainable development of the area.

This article explores the different trade union responses to the growth of precarious work in the retail sector in Estonia, Poland and Slovenia in the context of the global economic crisis. The empirical research is based on interviews with trade union leaders and case studies of large multinational hypermarket chains. The analysis of sector-level union responses suggests the crisis has not deeply changed their path-dependent character. The most effective union tactics, involving political mobilization and sector-level collective bargaining aimed at halting the growth of precarious work, were observed in Sloveniaʼs neocorporatist system of industrial relations. By contrast, company-level collective bargaining and mobilization were more advanced in the two neoliberal systems, Estonia and Poland. In all three countries, the most important innovations were unionled campaigns aimed at increasing public awareness about precarious work.

This article discusses selected ritual practices in Klagenfurt, the capital of the southern Austrian state of Carinthia. The first ritual is connected with 10 October, when the memory of the 1920 plebiscite is celebrated on the streets of Klagenfurt. In this plebiscite, the majority of people voted to stay in Austria, the successor state to Austria-Hungary. The second ritual is a more recent one, known as the Memorial Walk (Germ. Gedenk-gehen, Sln. Spominska hoja). Various cultural practices are analyzed, as well as the use of symbols and space, and media, state, and national discourses.
