This original scientific article, published in one of the most important journals for Mesoamerican archaeology, summarizes the results of the seventh field season of archaeological reconnaissance works in southeastern Campeche, Mexico, which was carried out in the southern part of the Calakmul Biosphere. Surface ceramics and the characteristics of architectural remains corroborate the occupation of the area from Middle Preclassic to Terminal Classic period of Maya culture, established in previous surveys.

The article presents a synthesis of current knowledge on the astronomical concepts and practices of the ancient Mesoamerican societies. Their familiarity with the regularities of the apparent motion of the Sun, the Moon and bright planets is attested in a large amount of astronomical data contained in codices and monumental hieroglyphic inscriptions. The study of architectural alignments has also disclosed that civic and ceremonial buildings were largely oriented on astronomical grounds.

The paper describes the generation of a digital surface model (DSM) and orthoimages from panchromatic and multispectral Ikonos stereopairs. It assesses the suitability of the images for vegetation height mapping of a large area and the applicability of the results for various spatial analyses. For evaluation purposes it was compared to very accurate lidar elevation data. The analysis revealed an overall vertical difference between the models of 8.2 m, where only one third of the differences are below 3 m.

This paper proves that effective interpretation of lidar elevation models requires appropriate data visualization. The new method which is based on diffuse illumination enabled mapping of previously unknown archaeological sites and to improve existing maps. In addition to the studies of past cultural and natural landscapes it can be effectively used in other scientific fields in which digital elevation model visualizations and automatic feature extraction techniques are indispensable, e.g. geography, geomorphology, cartography, hydrology, glaciology, forestry and disaster management.

The paper published in an edited volume concentrates on the meaning of »rootedness« or locality in one of the southern Albanian villages, Dhërmi/Drimades, and question its relatedness to land and property. It illustrates how the villagers who are »on the move« negotiate, manage and contest their locality through which they seek to ensure their ownership and property, and vice versa.
