On the fallow land of Kočevarjev vrt, in the area of Breg in the town of Vrhnika, in 2005 research was conducted on settlement remains which belong to the Roman vicus Nauportus. A presentation is given of an assemblage of ceramics from the refuse pit, which dates from the first phase of settlement. Judging by the sigillata and the thin-walled pottery, all the material belongs to the Tiberian age. The majority of the fine ceramic and the coarse tableware was produced in the region of the east Po plain and in Etruria. In addition to the Adriatic types of amphorae, there are also present some amphorae from the eastern Mediterranean. Among the kitchenware, however, it is the regional forms that predominate, and only some individual examples were imported from Italy.

In the course of Octavian’s Illyrian war (35–33 BC), the military navy played an important role, both at sea and on the rivers. Some of its actions are documented by ancient historians (notably Appian and Cassius Dio), while others are hypothesized on the basis of reconstructed military strategy and the logistics of the war. The geographical repartition of the defeated peoples suggests that they were attacked from several directions: from Aquileia and probably from northern Adriatic, from Ravenna Supply bases for the Roman army operating in the north were undoubtedly also the important ports of Senia and Iader, as well as Brundisium in the south.
