At the time when Slovenian military units are participating in NATO peace operations in crisis areas, it provides a retrospective view at various historical situations that in the past led soldiers from the Slovenian territory to various parts in the world. Contributions cover nearly all historical periods from Antiquity to the 20th century and, among others, illuminate the structure of the military organisation in the Roman Empire, the medieval and modern-era noble armies and crusading campaigns, as well as the participation of Slovenian population in military systems of all state forms that included the Slovenian territory since the emergence of modern states. The monograph clearly shows that the Slovenian territory was, in military terms, part of a broader European and partly also global community.

Through a detailed presentation and study of prolific and heterogeneous historiographical production of Venetian Friuli and Habsburg Gorizia, the monograph addresses certain aspects of the modern-era mentality, with a special focus on historiographers’ diverse collective identities (e.g. the provincial consciousness in Friuli and Gorizia, the feeling of belonging to Italian language and cultural sphere, etc.). People on the other side of the Alps, especially Germans, were regarded as barbarians, based on the ancient antagonisms between the Germanic tribes and the Romans. Certain other stereotypes, as well, for instance, about the Greeks, Jews and Turks, stem from ancient prejudice. Most hostile of all, however, was the attitude towards the Ottomans, as a result of the constant fear of their incursions.

In the mid-1880s, Phylloxera appeared in the vineyards of eastern Lower Carniola, after more than a decade of wreaking havoc on the vines in both halves of the Habsburg Monarchy. The efforts made by the authorities to prevent its spread to unaffected vineyards were, just as in other provinces, doomed to fail. Therefore, viticulture in areas ravaged by Phylloxera came to an almost total standstill. The solution was presented by the introduction of resistant American species grafted with European varieties. Due to considerable investments required for the restoration of vineyards the affected winegrowers also received the aid of provincial and state authorities. Had it not been for the well-organised system of interest-free loans and numerous state and provincial nurseries, viticulture might only be preserved in the framework of very few large estates.
