The topic of this book lies on the intersection of regional studies, development theories and interactions between human and social capital. Its main emphasis is on the dynamics of local and regional development (innovative) cores and their connectivity with wider socio-cultural context. In its focus are development potentials, innovative actors, supporting institutions and the modes of cooperation between these factors. The book is based on the combination of secondary statistical sources and primary qualitative data, which were used as a basis of research methodology.

This paper summarizes 15 years of empirical research at various spatial levels on social capital and economic performance. On the ?rm level, results are unambiguous: there is strong evidence of the impact of social capital on ?rms’ performance. However, the results become less clear for spatial units with a large number of anonymous actors. The contradictory results of studies on national and regional levels can be explained in part by insuf?cient measures of the main component parts of social capital: social networks and the norms and values distributed among them.

The authors recognize that the debate on social capital is still ongoing in the literature and that it is fed from different, sometimes conflicting perspectives. Therefore, the spatial dimension of social capital can only be conceptualized in the light of these different perspectives, which necessitates an explorative approach. The paper discusses social capital from a conceptual angle, as it distinguishes between two key approaches (the “structuralist” and “interactionist” approaches).
