This paper presents an analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data from research into Slovenian networks of older adults. The research focused on two generations, parents and grandparents, at two different points in time (1987 and 2005). The research established that, regardless of external motivation, the most important predictors of attitudes toward adult education are family values and individual perspectives on learning and education formed throughout life and influenced by various social networks (in particular family and neighborhood networks).

We examined the functioning of school institutions and asked how we can introduce into the public school system concepts of democracy and democratization that are necessary to the individual, the society, and the state. We examined the authority of teachers and the establishment of rules as to how schools should function. One part of the discussion is dedicated to the ethics of human rights and responsibilities. The main question this study attempts to answer is if and how the values contained in the concept of human rights can be taught and practiced.
