In this paper we have analyzed the quantitative and qualitative data from the research on social networks of the elderly in Slovenia and focused on two generations (parents and grandparents) at two different points in time (1987 and 2005). We have established that regardless of the various external encouragements, the most important factors for further learning are family values and the individual’s attitude towards learning that is formed throughout life and is influenced by social networks (especially family and neighbourhood).

The aim of this study was to discover possible relationships between self-regulated learning dimensions and students’ success in a distance-learning programme. The sample consisted of 319 students: 83 males and 236 females. They completed the ‘Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire’ (Pintrich, Smith, Garcia & McKeachie 1991), which was compared to their number of exams written, frequency of exam repetition and average course grade. The results showed the importance of motivational factors, such as intrinsic goal orientation, task value and self-efficacy on the one hand, and effort regulation strategies on the other.

The article addresses the issues related to the use and evaluation of educational materials during the teaching process and independent learning. The authors argue that the selection of educational materials is influenced by a variety of factors, including educational goals, the educational contents under discussion, the developmental characteristics of learners and, last but not least, the design and availability of educational materials. The article presents the findings of the empirical research study conducted in Slovenia in 2010 and 2011. The research – which consisted of a random sample of 370 teachers and 552 students of three selected and reformed educational programs of vocational education and training – studied the importance that the teachers and students attach to the structural and content characteristics of the educational materials they work with during school instruction and learning.
