In the paper imprecise Markov chains with certain absorption in an absorbing state is discussed. Such Markov chains are observed for instance when a population will eventually go extinct, although before extinction we can observe a unique stationary distribution on the set of non-absorbing states. It is proved that under given regularity conditions a unique (imprecise) conditional distribution exists even if the parameters are not known precisely.

The authors consider two algorithms for establishing partitions of signed networks in terms of relaxed structural balance. One is an older heuristic relocation algorithm available in Pajek and the other is a new exact solution procedure. The former is quite fast, but no global minimum is guaranteed. The new branch-and-bound algorithm is much slower but global minimum is always found. Together, the two algorithms provide a sound foundation for partitioning signed networks and yield optimal partitions.

The authors focus on the integration of mobile phones into survey data collection that mostly depends on relationship between costs and errors. In the underlying research they have developed and evaluated a model, which simultaneously considers data quality through all sources of survey errors and research costs at different stages of a survey project.

In the process of 'transition' there were institutional reforms which were launched to abolish the socialist economic and political systems. The provision of welfare was also affected by 'transition'. In the article we focus on social support provision from informal sources, i.e., ego-centered social support networks, which are an important foundation for the quality of everyday life. The research question is the following: do the current types of social networks differ from those in the 1980s? We try to answer it by analyzing and comparing the data on social support networks in 1987 and 2002.

The paper introduces the concept of active user, which emanates from the changing societal conditions of everyday life, in which individuals are faced with numerous communication technologies. The concept of activeness is embedded in the wider context of a structuration process, which brings affordances and limitations for social action. The paper brings conceptual innovations, which can further be developed and used for analyzing and understanding such phenomena as empowerment, social capital and social cohesion in the context of internet and mobile phone technologies.
