The Values in transition V. book offers descriptive analysis derived from the longitudinal sociological project Slovenian Public Opinion Survey (SJM) 1968-2012. While the first four books provided insight into the SJM survey waves dating between 1968-2009, the fifth book opens up a new comparative perspective. It is a comprehensive collection of results from one of the most important international comparative surveys, the European Social Survey (ESS) 2002-2010. ESS has established itself as one of the leading social science surveys in Europe. Due to its methodological rigor it is a particularly relevant and informative data source for users who seek to investigate the values of modern Europeans, and along them, the values of Slovenes. The book offers an overview of public attitudes towards all main topics and dilemmas faced by modern European societies. Overview of the ESS survey data that was so far possible only via the social science data archives and therefore only accessible to statistically literate users, is now available in the traditional book form for statistically less advanced users. The target audience of the book are not only researchers-sociologists, but a wide range of social scientists from various disciplines, as well as policy makers. The book further emphasizes the status of the SJM project as infrastructure project of social research in Slovenia.

COBISS.SI-ID: 263764736General social surveys are designed to provide relevant and reliable data on social processes to a wide range of academic communities as well as answer the needs of policy makers for making informed decisions and identify emerging social trends. One of the ways to assess to what extent a survey is successfully pursuing the task of being a tool of societal monitoring is the examination of its bibliographic outputs. The empirical basis for this paper will be extensive bibliographic information on the usage of European Social Survey data in the period between 2003 and 2011. Starting from a premise, that a key to academic outreach is the relevance of survey indicators and that academic impact can be increased primarily by strategic choice and constructions of modules and indicators, the aim is to investigate the role of bibliographic monitoring in assessing the evolution of ESS academic outreach and its spread into a growing number of academic communities. The paper will begin with a look into the dynamic of ESS rounds usage to assess the lead time needed for a thematic module to yield its first academic result. It will proceed to investigate the popularity of various analytical topics and their association with different academic communities. Finally, it will explore how item level bibliographic monitoring can be used as a self-evaluation tool to improve the structure of the survey questionnaire and enhance its academic impact, based on initial examples of such practice in the European Social Survey.

COBISS.SI-ID: 31800413The paper explores the relationships between inequality, wealth and trust in the police. Exploration is done by use of different statistical methods applied on the data on trust in the police taken from European Social Survey Round 5 – Module: Trust in Police and the Criminal Courts: A Comparative European Analysis (2011), as well as on the data on wealth and income inequality taken from Human development reports 2010 and 2011. Findings: It is clear, that the trust in police and its dimensions (effectiveness, distributive fairness, procedural fairness and police values and priorities) are significantly correlated in systematic manner with wealth (GDPppp) and income inequality (Gini). The trust in the police in Slovenia is low in comparison with western European countries. Trust in police values and priorities and trust in police fairness discern countries with low trust in police from countries with high trust in police.
