Article investigates the impact of the European Union membership on party politics in Slovenia. Although the article’s primary focus is on the first four years of EU membership, it also draws comparisons and contrasts with the accession period. Since independence in 1991 and until full membership in 2004 the EU has only played a side role in party politics in Slovenia. The conducted analysis showed that the influence of the EU in party politics relates mainly to two factors – the governmental position of a party and its representation in the European Parliament.

The author exposes the concept of multi-level citizenship as one of the main alternatives to contemporary citizenship that is still based on the concept of the nation-state. Namely, multi-level citizenship is in its multi-layered formulation not exclusively related to one of potentially several levels of sovereign authorities. On the contrary, it provides complementary effects since it reduces potential frictions of different levels of authority thus making it a viable alternative to national citizenship.
