The paper describes patterns of use in public open space such as parks, that indicate relationships between the design of parks and the detailed ways that users inhabit such places. It draws on an innovative combination of behaviour-mapping and GIS techniques, to reveal common patterns of behaviour that appear to be correlated with particular layouts and details. It demonstrates the value of the methodology in revealing relationships between design and use, based on empirical evidence, and supporting the kind of detailed design guidance that can be of benefit for future design practitioners.

The paper presents a case study of analysis of preference maps for municipality Komenda, where residents marked areas, which should be preserved. To make the best of their potential usefulness in spatial planning and to contribute to the transparency of the process, we inferred explicit decision criteria in the form of relations between preferential annotations and spatial characteristics, using selected data mining approaches. They were reported in the form of decision rules and in a graphical form of a nomogram. The methodology has proven to be useful for applicability in spatial planning.

Public space is a major determinant of the reputation of a housing estate. The design and organisation of public space affect the image that the neighbourhood. If properly planned, managed, and used, public spaces provide the opportunity for social contact, which occurs in entrance courts, on playgrounds, on green areas and on streets and squares. This chapter identifies some of the most important public-space related problems in large housing estates and sets out measures that could be helpful in creating more attractive residential environments.
