The book analyzes the ethnic processes in Slovenian-Croatian border region, which was considered as regio specialis, according to the series of findings in previous research of both authors. The core scientific question aimed at explanations of specific spatial relations as concerns the census self-identifications on ethnic affiliations and mother tongue. Moreover, to adequately respond to the posed question, the authors applied innovative analytical methodology combining census data with socio-spatial information and thus rendering previously inapt valuable indicators after 1991.

Socio-ethnic school segregation in Slovenia is not a well researched area. This chapter provides a short overview of the ethnic structure of Slovenia and presents the main characteristics of primary education in the country, as well as the current forms of integration of different ethnic groups into the education system. Due to a lack of data on socio-ethnic school segregation at national level we focus only on one primary school in the municipality of Ljubljana.

The paper focuses on the promotion of the Slovenian language in Italy. The paper draws from the theory of human capital and by combining concepts from social marketing and sociolinguistics, identifies three paths to promote minority languages and tries to apply them to the case of the Slovenian linguistic minority in Italy. Increasing the number of speakers and improving the linguistic skills in the minority language represents the first path. The second path deals with the promotion of language use, while the third path deals with language status in the environment, where the minority lives.
