When Slovenia became a sovereign state in 1991, it had to define who its citizens were. Thus the boundaries of the welfare state were newly defined. Were all residents of Slovenia, regardless of their ethnic belonging, equal in this respect? The article provides an answer to this question by elucidating parts of the secession legislation – the initial designation of citizenry and one of its indirect outcomes, the erasure from the register of permanent residents.

Social parenthood is a social relation, social category, and a concept which due to changes in people’s everyday life has gained growing scientific attention. Using an historical and ethnographic perspective, the author shows how and why consanguine relations in Europe gained such an important status in comparison to social ties between children and adults, and points out a continuous demonising of non-blood parental ties that is still reflected in Slovenia in law and practice.

The article deals with the disability ethics and emphasises the forms of violence, experienced by the persons with different impairments living in public care and at home. The issue of violence against people with disabilities was not an object of attention due to the structural focusing on the lives and experiences of non-disabled individuals, only. The comparative analysis shows that violence against people with disabilities is a structural problem, which is the consequence of the power relations and everyday live discriminations, experienced by people with disabilities.
