In rats, trigeminal ganglion neurons were retrogradly labelled with neuron markers. Periodontitis was induced in half of the rats. The expression of TLR4 receptor was evaluated in neurons of trigeminal ganglion that innervate healthy and inflamed gingiva. Results have shown that some neurons that innervate gingiva constitutively express TLR4 receptor and that the expression of the receptor is increased during gingival inflammation. According to the results, neurons that innervate gingiva are able to recognise the presence of bacterial products in gingiva.
