The study examined the possibility to perform a focused selective stimulation of a limited number of axons in the human vagus nerve in vivo. Stimulation was performed in a patient during carotid endarterectomy. A cuff with 39 electrodes was placed around mid-cervical left vagus nerve and the electrodes were sequentialy activated in triplets. Stimulation through one electrode triplet reversibly triggered typical effects in human heart. The study opens the way to the application of implantible electrodes for therapeutic purposes.

COBISS.SI-ID: 26042329Anti-idiotypic antibodies recognize the binding site for the specific antigen in a chosen antibody. They mimic the structure of its particular antigen. The use of anti-idiotypic antibodies to trigger an immunological response to the pathological form of the prion protein was examined. Mice and chickens were used to induce an immunologic response to our own antibody V5B2, specific for the pathologic form of prion protein. This investigation indicates a possibility for immunization against the patologic prion protein which might be usable for treatment of prion diseases.

COBISS.SI-ID: 2440072The authors analyzed little known cases, in which the brain glioma tumors presented with extraneural metastases located outside the skull. This is an analysis of great practical imporance in the field of the diagnostics of brain tumors, which warns against diagnostic problems which pathologists are likely to meet in such cases.

COBISS.SI-ID: 25726169This review paper is based on our own experimental work in this field. The authors analyze how older age influences decreased ability and success of reinnervation and functional recovery of tissues and organs after surgical treatment of peripheral nerve injuries. From this discussion certain practical measures and advices are formulated ragarding the treatment of such injuries in the aging population which is becoming an increasingly more important medical problem.
