Three members of the programme research group, F. Pernuš, B. Likar and R. Bernard, cofounded the company Sensum in 2000. They, together with the employees, developed Sensum into a global niche company in the field of automatic visual inspection of pharmaceutical tablets and capsules. In the reporting period 2009-2014 the number of employees increased from 8 to 50. From the currently 50 employees, 10 have a PhD degree while additional 4 employees are pursuing a PhD. Sensum, with which several other members of the group are tightly connected, is developing, producing and marketing hightech visual inspection systems for the global pharmaceutical market. Customers of Sensum are the leading pharmaceutical multinationals, like Pfizer, Novartis, Roche, Bayer, Eli Lilly, Teva, Boehringer, etc.

In the reporting period 20092014, the researchers on this programme have published 240 papers in peer-reviewed journals with an IF! They have published 137 papers, which is more than a half of all papers, in the top 25% of journals in a field according to the IF. Researchers, that participated to the research programme the whole period, have published 164 papers. In the reporting period 2009-2014 the 240 papers were cited 1709 times (source: Sicris). These figures clearly indicate the above the average results of the group and helped in the recognition of the group, the University of Ljubljana and Slovenia in the scientific fields covered by the programme.

Registration of pre- and intra-interventional data is the key technology for image-guided radiation therapy, minimally invasive surgery, endoscopy, and interventional radiology. We have reviewed and critically evaluated a large number of 3D/2D data registration methods that utilize 3D CT or MR images as the pre-interventional data and 2D X-ray projection images as the intra-interventional data. The 3D/2D registration methods are reviewed with respect to image modality, image dimensionality, registration basis, geometric transformation, user interaction, optimization procedure, subject, and object of registration. The paper which was published in 2012 was already cited 72 times and is the most downloaded paper published in Medical Image Analysis. As such, it is having a large impact on 3D-2D image registration which is the key enabling technology for minimally invasive image guided therapy.

Pellet coating processes in the pharmaceutical industry are usually driven by fairly well optimized procedures, while coating suspension sprayed on pellets and adverse effects, such as agglomeration, can not be seen during coating process and are only detected at the very end of the process. Digital visual imaging as a process analytical technology (PAT) tool for fluid-bed pellet coating processes is proposed. A method is developed that accurately estimates spherical diameter, coating thickness and adverse agglomeration of pellets by contactless measurements. The knowledge has been transformed from academia to industry. The SME Sensum has already developed a prototype system that is being tested.
