Norwegian steel construction association invited Prof. D. Beg to have on 28th March 2012 a one day course on the design of plated structures (mainly slender plate and box girders for bridges) for Norwegian structural engineers. The main topic of the course was advanced stability problems, including stiffened plates, interactive stability, etc. The invitation followed the publication of the book Design of plated structures, published by Ernst&Sohn - a Wiley Company and ECCS in 2010 (with three coauthors from Germany and France).

COBISS.SI-ID: 5237601The paper presents solar exposure study of typical urban patterns in Slovenia. A general overview of the state of art in the field of solar exposure of building envelopes in our country is presented. For calculations computer tool Shading II was used. Specific influential factors on the length of solar exposure were studied: specific envelope area, mutual shading of buildings, building shape and orientation. In connection to building orientation the building shape has a major role in achieving the maximum solar exposure. It depends on the specifics of each case, which of the influential factors is going to have the major impact.

COBISS.SI-ID: 5968481Differences between thermal insulation materials in their impact on the environment are mostly presented per unit of weight of the material itself, rather than as weight per unit of volume. Such presentation circumvents the fact that the density and the thermal conductivity value are very different for these materials, which greatly affects the rate of global warming potential caused by the installation of such thermal insulation in the building envelope. Differences between various thermal insulations, especially in their properties of the environmental impact of densities and thermal conductivities (λ), were the impetus to making this analytical study, with the aim to independently compare different thermal insulating materials according to their environmental impact required for the basic purpose of thermal insulations: effective protection against heat transmittance.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1024461908Developed symbolic-numeric systems AceGen and AceFEM for automatic code generation and FEM analysis are in Slovenia and in Europe used as basic tools in research projects from various technical fields, including civil engineering, biomechanics, nanotechnology and space technology. New methods, based on newly developed tools, have been presented at universities and institutes around Europe.

COBISS.SI-ID: 6193249ArceloMittal put a new product on the market – biggest hot rolled angle profiles and wanted to get information on the buckling resistance of structural elements made of such angles. With a water-jet cutting method a distribution of residual stresses was measured on 6 specimens. The obtained residual stress patterns were used together with standard initial geometric imperfections to calculate buckling resistance of angle profiles and to construct corresponding buckling curves. The results show that the results of this study give more favourable results than the European standard EN 1993-1-1 and the corresponding improvements will be proposed.
