Based on research work on galling properties of tool steels dr. Podgornik was asked to give invited lecture at the NORDTRIB 2010 conference, one of the main tribology conferences worldwide. He presented contribution of the deep-cryogenic treatment and plasma nitriding on improvement of mechanical properties, abrasive wear resistance and galling properties of P/M high-speed steel. Furthermore, effect of austenizing temperature and treatment time were presented. At the end negative effect of combining both technologies was presented and elaborated.
B.04 Guest lecture
COBISS.SI-ID: 11451675Based on the research in the field of microstructure effect on residual stress distribution optimization of the rolls production process was performed. First, residual stress values, required for proper operation of rolls for hot rolling were established, which greatly reduced the risk of rolls failure. Next, effect of different production phases and parameters on the residual stress field was determined and in combination with numerical simulation (FEM) optimal values defined. Using these findings company increased its competitiveness and is now known to provide residual stress data for their products.

Invited by Prof. S. Jacobson and Prof. U. Wiklund from the Uppsala University, Dr. Podgornik prepared two lectures for postgraduate students of "Swedish Research School in Tribology". In his first lecture "A coatings expose" he gave an overview and properties of hard coatings used for tools and machine parts. The review involved methods, tribological and mechanical properties, and degree of industrialization. The second lecture "Concerns in coatings selection" has covered the limitations, problems and approaches to the proper selection of hard coatings for given application/contact conditions.

COBISS.SI-ID: 952490Based on past research work on scaling in walking beam furnace, the technology of application of protective coating for diminution of scaling and decarburization of steel billets was determined. The transfer of technology into steel work Store Steel was done. Manufactured was industrial equipment for application of protective coating on steel billets before their entrance into reheating furnace. Application of protective coating enables better quality of steel surface of hot rolled products.
