Cyanobacteria are globally important primary producers that may alter components of their habitats, such as the density of competitors or predators or the availability of critical nutrients, by synthesizing natural products. Toxic as well as non-toxic cyanobacterial blooms are a rich source of metabolites possessing a variety of biological activities. They are ready available because of their fast growth and the ability to form dense almost monospecific aggregations. Here we describe several toxic and non-toxic cyanobacterial metabolites and their activities.

We showed that organophosphorous pesticides induce adverse effects in non-nervous systems. The most important findings are that low concentrations of OP induce genotoxic and mitogenic effects in HepG2 cells, that they change phosphorylation of kinases involved in stress response and change expression of genes involved in stress response leading to changes in basic cellular processes involved in cancer initiation, and that they enhance genotoxicity of BaP by favouring its metabolism toward the pathway of formation of o-quinones and reactive oxygen species.

The journal publishes original and review articles in the fields of diagnostic and intervention radiology, nuclear medicine, ultrasound diagnostics, radiotherapy, clinical and experimental oncology, radiobiology, radiophysics and irradiation protection. From 2009 onwards the journal is indexed in JCR/Science Edition.

COBISS.SI-ID: 32649472»Glioma Invasion Forum« was attended by 50 prestigious scientists, physicians and representatives of pharmaceutical industry. Over a decade the leaders of the research groups from all around the world are having this kind of meetings, which raised the quality of our research and its clinical applications. The meeting was supported by a number of sponsors, the main being the Pharmaceutical Company La Roche. By this, we have proved the social importance of our contribution for the health of the population, as well as string links with the industrial sector.
B.01 Organiser of a scientific meeting
COBISS.SI-ID: 2118991In 2009, the two meetings of the Slovenian scientists, working in the fields of genetics. molecular biology and biochemistry, applied in many different fields, have joined. Therefore the participation was over 400 scientists, including many foreigners. It happened for the first time in the history of these meetings that the plenary lecturer was Slovenian scientist and that this was a woman. Therefore, this lecture is not only the scientific success of our project group, but also socio-economically relevant event for the women in science.
