The book is aimed to graduate and post graduate students interested in structure and function of peptides and proteins. It has 424 pages and consists of five parts. The first one covers the fate of peptides and proteins from the synthesis to degradation, including structural and folding aspects. Second part covers methods for protein studies. Protein engineering, protein bioinformatics and proteomics are the focus of the third part. In the forth part different classes of proteins and peptides are described in more detail. Finally, the last part focuses on diseases as the consequence of misstructured proteins and describes peptides and proteins used as drugs. The book was published by CRC Press (Taylor and Francis division) and the publisher rated it as a best-seller the first year after print. The researchers of the programme group also contributed 15 chapters to books and monographs published by international publishers. T

COBISS.SI-ID: 29395673This patent presents a new approach in noninvasive diagnostics of ovarian endometriosis by determining metabolites in blood of patients. The analytes were quantified by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry and eight lipid metabolites were identified as endometriosis-associated biomarkers. A stepwise logistic regression procedure was used for selecting the best combination of biomarkers. lnventors of this patent are from University of Ljubljana and Helmholtz Zentrum Munich. Besides the cited patent the members of the programme group hold 4 European and 2 USA patent applications, cited under COBISS.SI-ID 29981657, 2424911, 25581273, 26729177, 1349980, 22736857.

COBISS.SI-ID: 29981657The book is a systematically written supplementary textbook for students of dentistry. It brings the latest knowledge on the selected topics of biochemistry of the oral cavity that are not presented in other general biochemistry textbooks or biochemistry textbooks for medicine students. It should be noted that all the researchers in the programme group have a full teaching load as lecturers or teaching assistants, with only an additional 20% of employment for research. All the researchers are leading experts in their fields. We incorporate new scientific insights gained from our own research work and from keeping up-to-date with the latest scientific literature in our teaching, thus raising the quality of education at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. In addition to this book, in the past 5 years researchers of the programme group published 6 university textbooks, 6 laboratory and practicum instruction manuals and 4 highschool textboks approved by the Ministry of education.
D.10 Educational activities
COBISS.SI-ID: 259014656Members of the programme group contributed to the organization of the International symposium Molecular Medicine and Biotechnology which took place at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 27th to 29th June 2012. Prof. dr. Ana Plemenitaš was the chair od the Programme committee. Symposium was organized to honor the 40th anniversary of the Institute of Biochemistry and 20th anniversary of the Medical Centre for Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Medicine. Institute of Biochemistry is a research institute which has in its 40-year history contributed to development and transfer of new methods and skills in clinical practice. During this time it has established successful cooperation with many top research institutes from around the world and thereby contributed to wealth of knowledge in medical and life sciences. Institute is also an educating establishment where knowledge transfer takes place on two levels: at undergraduate level, where future medical doctors and dentists are educated, and graduate studies, which involves students from various natural and biological sciences. The symposium brought together established and top-quality international and national experts, with whom we have long-standing collaboration. They presented “hot” or “trendy” topics interesting to all researchers in the field of medicine and life sciences. Since symposium was organized for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Institute of Biochemistry and 20th anniversary of the Medical Centre for Molecular Biology we have invited also professors from both institutes, and alumni researchers and medical doctors who have been trained over the years and are today running eminent medical diagnostic laboratories.
