The phylogeographical architecture of Spermophilus citellus is expected to shed light on the putative long-term presence of the steppic ecosystem in SE Europe. Among 31 cyt b haplotypes, three highly divergent phylogenetic lineages were recognized. The estimated time for the deepest divergence is 0.58 Mya, suggests the long-term persistence of a short-grass steppic refugium in the southern Balkans. The three phylogeographical lineages of the European ground squirrel should be regarded as independent units for conservation management purposes.

Using molecular markers (complete cyt b sequence) we reconstructed phylogenetic history of social voles in the Balkans and SW Asia. We recognized 6 monophyletic lineages which we interprete as distinct species. These species cluster into two evolutionary lineages (the socialis and the guentheri linegae). Within its present scope, M. guentheri je paraphyletic with respect to M. hartingi. Microtus hartingi most probably evolved in W Anatolia and colonized Europe relatively late.

The work describe molecular characteristics assessed by AFLP marker system and some morphological traits of the leading olive varity ‘Oblica’. A total of 36 typical ‘Oblica’ trees were sampled from five growing regions in Croatia. An analysis of morphological traits revealed high variability among the samples. These results suggest that a few closely-related clones constitute the genetic structure of ‘Oblica’, while the observed morphological diversity is due to environmental factors.

In 2009 we published the 3rd volume from a monographic series dealing with the mammals of Turkey and Cyprus. This volume covers 32 rodent secies from the families (subfamilies) Cricetinae, Muridae, Spalacidae, Calomyscidae, Castoridae, Hystricidae and Myocastoridae. It is a standard review, with determination keys and information for higher taxonomic units. Each species' account involved a detailed description (together with drawings of a skull and dentition, and table of body dimensions), distributional map with a list of localities, and information on biology.

We carried out a phylogeographic study to provide a biogeographic scenario, based on molecular data, outlining the major processes that determined the current distribution of the European snow vole, a species with narrow habitat requirements and a patchy distribution. Our data retrived southern glacial refugia (Iberia, Balkans, Middle East and Italy) and one northern glacial refugium and of a simultaneous and rapid splitting due to a relatively fast initial expansion of populations.
