Superparamagnetic, photocatalytic nanocomposite particles are synthesized using hetero-agglomeration of the previously synthesized anatase nanoparticles and the functionalized maghemite nanoparticles in their suspension. The magnetic maghemite nanoparticles have to display a positive electric surface charge. This can be achieved by grafting aminopropyl silane (APS) onto their surfaces. A systematic study of the APS grafting onto the maghemite nanoparticles was published in a scientific journal.

The patent legally protects the product – a photocatalyst for water purification in suspensions, which is magnetically separable, as well as the procedure for its preparation. The material differs from already known materials in the application of magnetic carriers in the form of agglomerates of superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The application of the agglomerates enables good efficiency in the separation. The patented procedure for the coating of TiO2 layers on solid substrates using the hydrolysis of TiOSO4 is appropriate for the preparation of different materials for various applications.

Our original procedure for the synthesis of the superparamagnetic, photocatalytic nanocomposite particles was published. Such particles will be used in water purification where the photocatalyst is dispersed in water and magnetically separated from the suspension after purification. The procedure is based on the hetero-agglomeration of the maghemite nanoparticles and anatase nanoparticles in their aqueous suspension. The photocatalytic activity of the anatase even improved after bonding onto the carriers. This improvement was related to the electronic interactions between the two materials.

Superparamagnetic, photocatalytic nanocomposite particles are synthesized by coating a photocatalytic anatase layer onto agglomerates of magnetic iron oxide - maghemite. The electronic interactions between the two materials can result in a decrease of the photocatalytic activity of the anatase, or in the photodissolution of the magnetic phase. The interactions can be prevented by applying a thin layer of insulating silica. A systematic study of coating the maghemite nanoparticles with a silica layer using the hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate was published.
