Complaints due to ground shaking and tremors were regularly addressed to the management of the Velenje Coal Mine. The micro-seismic monitoring system was set up on the surface in the nearby urban areas and also directly in the vicinity of mining activities. Results of these measurements were carefully analysed and openly presented to the public together with various safe vibration limit standards (national standards). The system for automatic publishing of measurements immediately after the event recorded was also set up.

Numerous studies in the past attempted to characterize bulk solids. However, some characteristics of bulk solids still remain insufficiently understood. This paper presents some interesting results about the influence of the particle size distribution. Since characterization of bulk solids goes beyond determining the above mentioned properties, a novel attritor which was designed and used in our laboratory as a significant part of a new method for determining the influence of particle shape on the unconfined yield strength of a bulk solid, is presented.

With FEM the prediction of flow rates on the “drive in” filters is much better. The velocity of flow has to be carefully controlled, not to overpass that two criteria used for calculation. Based on the working experience from Velenje coal mine, from a few tests of “drive in” filters installations, it can be said that the model results are in the accordance with the reality. So, it can be concluded that the planned dewatering program has sense only if a special measure of activation will be used, and if the time to switch from one longwall face to another will be short enough.

The extent and the intensity of the mining operations impose impacts on the stresses and cause deformation changes in the rocks and in the coal seams on a broader area of excavations. The method of sub-level coal extraction requires multi-caving of the hangingwall layers, which are recompressed, and in sub-level stoping each represents a hangingwall in new longwall. The numerical model which was prepared, allows deeper understanding of the coal exploitation processes relating to the geomechanical processes.

The main goal to reduce surface settlement on the minimum is connected with stiffness of the primary lining and effective protection excavation face against deformation process realized in rock pillar ahead the excavation. The construction process was modeled with PLAXIS 3D tunnel program. Input parameters were determined by 3D back analyses with Soft-Soil-Creep (SSC) constitutive material model, which takes into account rheological phenomena.
